Useful Tools to keep in your Car
It is not usually until you actually have a breakdown that you consider what tools you wish you had carried with you. Below is a list of the 11 most important items you should always carry in your vehicle before setting out on your destination:
- Tool set – basic tool kit including proper fitting spanners to undo wheel nuts and a car jack.
- Cell/mobile phone – to contact emergency services including breakdown assistance and to also let family and friends know where you are and that you may be delayed.
- Flashlight/torch – to provide light, so you can see in the dark.
- Blanket/warm clothes – it is essential you carry blankets and extra clothing, if your car won’t start you will have no heating, or if travelling at night time or in the winter time. Clothes and blankets keep you warm/keep you alive.
- Emergency food and water, you should always carry extra food and water, above what you may take say for a picnic, as basically survival food, this food should be long life food, not perishables!
- Foot pump – to add pressure to your tyres.
- Batteries/charger – spare batteries for your torch, flashlight or charger for your mobile phone.
- Shovel – Carrying a shovel, even a plastic one, can help dig yourself out of trouble e.g. in wintry conditions.
- Candle & matches – not only can a candle provide light in a broken down vehicle, but is also a source of heat, for the cold nights or during winter time. A set of matches obviously goes hand-in-hand to light your candle or even light an outside fire.
- Warning triangle, can be bought in car accessory stores, but is compulsory to carry when travelling in Europe.
