Driving in Bad Weather

Driving in poor weather conditions is vitally important and it requires you to be extra vigilant whilst driving. Also checking that your vehicle is roadworthy to undertake your journey, helping you make a safe journey to your destination.

There are many different driving skills required for various road or weather conditions, here are a few tips on what checks should be carried out on your vehicle before setting off on your journey:

  • Tyres – make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure, and that none of your tyres have any bald patches.
  • Battery/alternator – check that both are in good working order
  • Windscreen wipers – make sure they are clean; free from grit or stones, and that the rubber is touching your screen.
  • Oil/fuel – make sure you have the correct amount of oil in the engine, and more than enough fuel for your journey, always allow for extra fuel usage in bad weather, as it is unlikely that you will be travelling at the most fuel efficient speed.
  • Brakes/fan belts – check that your brakes are in good working order and that your fan belt is not showing signs of wear and tear.
  • Radiator – especially in winter, make sure you have sufficient anti-freeze added to your journey.

Driving skills and tips for when driving in poor weather conditions

  • Always allow extra time for your journey
  • Drive at slower speeds reduces the risk of accidents
  • Expect the unexpected – be prepared to stop at short notice
  • Keep your distance – from the vehicle in front, giving  you sufficient time to stop
  • Try to avoid slamming on your brakes – as this can lead to skidding, or your wheels to lock
  • Keep your windscreen clean from dirt and smudges, this can make driving harder.
  • If heavy rain, fog or snowy conditions – switch on your lights!
  • Switch on your local radio in your car – so as to keep up to date on the latest driving and weather conditions
  • More importantly – Keep you and your passengers Safe and Secure – Drive Safely Keep your speed down.
