Prevention of Vehicle Breakdown

Breaking down is inconvenient and with a little care can be prevented. Below are just a few of the top reasons why we breakdown, and how to prevent it happening to us.

Flat Battery

The biggest reason for breakdown providers being called out is having a flat battery. To reduce it happening to you, regularly check to make sure it is topped up with distilled water, and that the connections are nice and secure. In the winter months you should check your battery at least once a week.

Likely reasons that your battery is not responding.

  • The battery is old and needs replacing
  • Leaving your lights, radio on when you leave the vehicle
  • You may need a new alternator
  • Loose terminals

Locking your Keys in the Vehicle

A common cause is locking the doors and leaving your keys inside. Remember to check the location of your keys before closing the door. And always have a spare set.

Flat Tyre or Tyre Blowouts

Another major reason for call-out is flat tyres. Things you should do before setting off on a journey are:

  • Check the tread- Check this at least weekly to prevent tyre erosion, the legal limit is 1.6mm
  • Check the tyre pressure is at the right level
  • Check there is no damage to the structure of the tyre- or objects that are inserted into the tyre, nails, glass, screws

Running out of Fuel

Many drivers run out of fuel, this is easily done; keep a regular check on the fuel gauge.

Using the wrong fuel

Check that you are putting in the correct type of fuel. This is a common mistake that can be very expensive-and could cost you in the region of a few thousand pounds.

Electrical Fault

Cars are now becoming more and more complex, and are now using more gadgets this is a common reason for many breakdowns, check that all your connections are properly secure before setting of on your journey.
